Villarreal will host the Spain senior side at Estadio de la Cerámica on Friday 27 March at 21.00, live on La 1. It will be the national team’s fourth visit to the ground, where they have never lost. It will be a big night for football in Vila-real and across Castellón.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, previous matches there include a Euro 2000 qualifier in 1999 and two World Cup warm-ups in 2008 and 2018.

Spain’s first outing there came on 5 June 1999, a Euro 2000 qualifier under José Antonio Camacho, beating San Marino 9-0. Fernando Hierro, Raúl, Gaizka Mendieta, Joseba Etxeberria with two, Luis Enrique with three, and a Gennari own goal made up the scoring.

After a gap, Spain returned on 19 November 2008 for a friendly against Chile, winning 3-0 under Vicente del Bosque. David Villa, Fernando Torres and Santi Cazorla, then a Villarreal favourite, found the net.

The most recent visit was another friendly on 3 June 2018, a 1-1 draw with Switzerland with Julen Lopetegui in charge, a tune-up before the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Álvaro Odriozola scored for Spain.
