Vinicius Jr. once again proved his importance to Real Madrid, scoring the decisive goal in the 1-0 win over Benfica

But while his brilliance on the pitch secured a vital Champions League result, the Brazilian forward also found himself at the centre of a controversy that went far beyond football.

It was another night where Madrid turned to the Brazilian when it mattered most. The move was simple but effective.

Kylian Mbappe fed Vinicius on the left, and the Brazilian did the rest. After scoring, Vinicius celebrated near the corner flag with his usual energy.

However, the reaction from the stands quickly turned hostile. Objects and bottles were thrown in his direction, with some supporters interpreting his celebration as a provocation.

The Brazilian responded by calmly turning around and showing the number on his shirt. There were no offensive gestures, no confrontation, just a silent reminder of who he was.

The tension escalated later in the match following the alleged racist incident involving Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

The situation deeply affected Vinicius, who appeared visibly shaken on the pitch. After the game, he chose to address the matter publicly through a social media statement, making his feelings clear.

In his message, he spoke about the pain of repeatedly facing such situations and criticised those who fail to act against racism. He wrote,

“Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their jerseys over their mouths to show how weak they are.

“But they have the protection of others who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them. Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in my family’s life.

“I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t understand why. On the other hand, it was just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose.

“I don’t like to appear in situations like this, especially after a great victory in which the headlines should be about Real Madrid, but it’s necessary,” he noted.
