Virgil van Dijk locked in a truly incredible feat on Sunday. Something unseen at Liverpool for nearly 100 years.

Sunday was an emotional one at Anfield. Liverpool saw out a 1-1 draw against Brentford with another disappointing performance but that was never the main event.

Instead, this was about saying goodbye to club legends. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson signed off as Liverpool players, while a good few more will later depart the club.

It all means that of Jurgen Klopp's greatest Liverpool team, only Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez remain. And the latter two are heavily linked with exits.

Van Dijk, though, remains remarkable. The Liverpool captain completed the 90 minutes against Brentford and with that, he officially played every single minute of the league campaign.

It's something that doesn't sound too extraordinary on paper. Van Dijk has done it before, after all. But it means he's done it at 34 years old.

Michael Reid points out that in doing so, Van Dijk is the oldest Liverpool player to play every minute in a league season since Tommy Lucas all the way back in 1931. It's an unbelievable achievement and one that extends the Dutchman's legend further.

He'll have to properly slow down one day but it appears he still has an awful lot left in the tank.

Virgil van Dijk: Situation Summary

Liverpool Campaign and Stats

As of 25 May 2026, Virgil van Dijk has concluded a turbulent domestic campaign under Arne Slot. Despite Liverpool's defensive inconsistencies—with Van Dijk branding the season "unacceptable" for the former champions—the 34-year-old captain remained a fixture. He started and played the full 90 minutes in yesterday's final Premier League fixture, a 1–1 draw against Brentford at Anfield.

Squad Upheaval and Cryptic Post

Following the emotional final whistle, Van Dijk took to social media to pay tribute to departing icons Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. However, his choice of photo—which also featured Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez—sparked intense speculation amongst fans that more high-profile summer exits are imminent.

Van Dijk’s attention now shifts to international responsibilities. The veteran centre-back is set to captain the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup in North America this June.
