Vitor Roque will undergo surgery at Palmeiras after suffering a fresh syndesmosis injury to his ankle. The syndesmosis comprises ligaments that keep the tibia and fibula aligned near the ankle, vital for stability.
According to Globo.com, the club has not given a recovery timescale, and he is expected to return only after the World Cup, scheduled between June and July.
In his first start after a month out, the number nine lasted 15 minutes. Following a heavy foul by Vicente Reis, he signalled for a change and made way for Luighi. He left the stadium with the area protected and walked with significant difficulty, and there was concern in the dressing room.
He had sustained a traumatic ligament injury to his left ankle in the Paulista semi-final against São Paulo on the first of March. He then decided with the club to play in the State final and scored one of the goals in the match that sealed the title against Novorizontino.
After beginning treatment, he attempted a comeback late that month, featuring in the second half against São Paulo and Botafogo on 18 and 21 March. He then returned to the care of the club’s health and performance unit. Palmeiras sought to rebuild his fitness and confidence, bringing him back only last Sunday for eight minutes against Athletico, but the new injury now rules him out for longer.
