Walsall assistant Terry Connor will take a short break from his duties, with former Birmingham City player Michael Johnson stepping in to work alongside interim head coach Darren Byfield for the Good Friday home match against Gillingham.

The club said in a statement that Connor will be away for a short period before returning to the dugout, and that Johnson has linked up with the staff immediately.

Connor, 61, succeeded Gary Waddock as assistant head coach last month after Waddock left to become Wealdstone manager. He had earlier filled in at Bescot while Waddock recovered from ankle surgery earlier this season.

Johnson made 262 appearances across eight years for Birmingham, scoring 12 goals and reaching the 2001 League Cup final. His playing career also took in Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, and he won 13 caps for Jamaica, featuring alongside Byfield at international level.

The 52-year-old later managed Guyana, had a brief caretaker spell at Notts County in 2009 and spent several seasons as their youth coach. He has since worked with Cardiff City under-21s and within the FA’s English youth set-up, and will spend time with Walsall during Connor’s absence.
