On one side stood Lamine Yamal, one of the most exciting young players of the current generation and a key figure for Barcelona and Spain. 

On the other was Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who has influenced an entire era and remains the game’s all-time leading goalscorer.

As the final whistle sounded, contrasting emotions were visible across the pitch.

Spain celebrated a place in the next round, while Ronaldo was left devastated after Portugal’s elimination, a defeat that marked the end of an era, with the Portuguese captain later confirming that it was his final appearance at a World Cup.

Instead of remaining with his teammates amid the celebrations, Yamal briefly stepped away to console the 41-year-old forward.
