(Watch) Historic semi-final win over Saudi Arabia qualifies Jordan to face Morocco in the Arab Cup final
Jordan have written historic chapter in their football journey after defeating Saudi Arabia 1-0 to book their place in the Arab Cup 2025 final currently being held in Qatar.
The semi final clash took place on Monday night at Al Bayt Stadium where the Jordanians delivered disciplined performance to eliminate the Saudis and reach the final of the competition for first time in their history.
The opening half marked by caution from both sides with Saudi Arabia controlling possession 66% but struggling to convert dominance into clear cut chances.
Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila produced early save in the 17 minute from direct freekick while the Jordanian defense dealt confidently with another Saudi set piece threat minutes later.
Saudi Arabia appealed for penalty in the 38 minute after the ball appeared to strike Mohannad Abu Taha’s arm.
However following VAR review , referee Juan Gabriel Benitez waved away the claims and awarded only corner kick as the score remained goalless at the break.
Jordan emerged with greater attacking intent after the restart and were rewarded in the 66 minute when Nizar Al Rashdan rose highest to meet pinpoint cross from Mahmoud Al Mardi powering well placed header into the net.
Saudi pushed hard for equaliser and nearly found one in the 71 minute when Firas Al Buraikan fired from close range but Abulaila reacted superbly to preserve Jordan’s lead.
Despite sustained late pressure , Jordan’s back line remained resolute repelling wave after wave of Saudi attacks.
Tensions rose in stoppage time as Saudi players appealed once again for penalty in the 90 minute but the referee allowed play to continue.
Moments later Saudi defender Waleed Al Ahmad was shown straight red card in the 90+6 minute after halting dangerous Jordanian counterattack.
With this victory, Jordan will face Morocco in Thursday’s final after the Atlas Lions cruised past UAE 3-0 in the other semifinal.
Meanwhile Saudi will contest the third-place playoff against the UAE on the same day.
