Rodrygo was one of the surprise names in Xabi Alonso’s starting XI as Real Madrid faced Oviedo, with the Brazilian handed a start in his preferred role on the left wing.

It was a bold choice from Alonso, as Vinicius Jr. had to start the game on the bench to make space for his fellow countryman.

The plan worked well in the opening 45 minutes, with Rodrygo enjoying a strong first half, linking up nicely with his teammates and creating problems for the Oviedo defence.

Rodrygo’s reaction

However, the second half told a different story. Madrid began to struggle as Oviedo pushed forward, and Alonso felt a change was needed to regain control of the match.

In the 63rd minute, the manager turned to Vinicius, deciding to replace Rodrygo. The decision did not sit well with the winger, who reacted angrily on the bench.

As soon as he sat down, he threw his shirt violently to the ground and appeared to complain while pointing towards the pitch.

His frustration was clear for everyone to see, even though Madrid went on to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Alonso defends Rodrygo’s display

After the game, Alonso was asked about Rodrygo’s performance and straightforwardly addressed the matter.

“He had a good game. On the left side, he linked up well with Alvaro (Carreras); Arda (Guler) and Kylian (Mbappe) were also drifting over there.

“He had a couple of shots, and it was difficult to find spaces with Oviedo sitting so deep,” the coach said.

While Alonso praised the Brazilian’s contribution, Rodrygo’s reaction will raise questions about his state of mind, especially with the intense competition for places in Real Madrid’s attack.

With Vinicius, Mbappe, and other talents vying for the same roles, every minute on the pitch matters.
