North London rivals link up to sublime effect in thrilling showdown

Tottenham and Arsenal loanees combined to score a sensational goal in the Bundesliga on Sunday night, with another former Gunner also on target.

There was high drama at Volksparkstadion, where rivals Hamburg and Werder Bremen clashed in a first Nordderby to take place in the top-flight of German football since 2017.

Jens Stage fired Bremen ahead in first-half stoppage time, before a pulsating second period in which ex-Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga struck to draw the hosts level.

Hamburg took their first lead of the night with 15 minutes to go in the standout moment of the match, when a free-kick delivered from the right flank by Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira was dispatched into the back of the net in sublime fashion by Tottenham teenager Luka Vuskovic, whose inventive backheel flick flew past goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.

There was more drama to come, however, with Justin Njinmah restoring parity for Bremen - who had an Arsenal loanee of their own on the bench in goalkeeper Karl Hein - before Vieira’s replacement, Yussuf Poulsen, delivered the winner six minutes from time just moments after being introduced off the bench.

His goal was the latest highlight of an impressive season so far in Germany for Vuskovic, who joined Tottenham in July as part of a deal agreed with Hajduk Split back in 2023 and featured briefly in pre-season before being sent for a season-long loan at Hamburg.

The versatile Croatian defender, 18, has earned high praise and awards for his performances and also scored in the 2-1 win over Heidenheim back in September.

Speaking last month, Vuskovic, who made his senior international debut in a World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands in November, revealed that Tottenham were keeping a close eye on his progress, though is unsure when he will be back with Spurs having no plans to recall him early.

“I’m happy with everything at HSV," Vuskovic said.

"My grades are good, even above expectations. My team-mates are great, everyone supports me and I have no bad words or criticism. I just need to keep going.

“I hear from [Tottenham], they follow me. They are a good club when it comes to developing young players. I don’t know when I will be back.”

It is a different situation for Vieira, whose Arsenal future remains in significant doubt with Hamburg’s season-long loan deal for the Portuguese playmaker including an option for a permanent transfer next summer.
