Real Madrid made it four wins in four games in the new season when they beat Real Sociedad 2-1 away from home on Saturday afternoon, thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler.
Despite the victory, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso left the Reale Arena very angry, directed towards match referee Jesus Gil Manzano.
The reason was the sending off of Dean Huijsen in the 32nd minute of the match. The referee showed the Spanish international a straight red card for an alleged last-man foul on Mikel Oyarzabal and later booked Alonso for his protests.
The decision has sparked major controversy, after all, Eder Militao was in a position to cover and Oyarzabal did not have the ball in control and was very far from the goal. But the referee was not even asked to check the pitchside monitors.
After the match, the Real Madrid coach approached the referee to discuss Huijsen’s dismissal in the first half. And Movistar cameras caught what Alonso told Gil Manzano.
“Jesus, I don’t want to, but you’re making me think badly, man,” Alonso told the match official.
“Did you not see that Militao is next to him? But Militao is next to him! He is five metres from the play,” Alonso exclaimed.
Concluding, the Real Madrid manager said: “This is definitely going to the CTA, it’s definitely going to the video,” referring to the videos of the Referees’ Committee (CTA) posting explanations about controversial decisions.
Speaking to the media after Real Madrid’s 2-1 win, Alonso directed his displeasure at the referee’s decision, saying:
“For me, it was a yellow card; Mili was close and the ball wasn’t under control. Watching the replay, I don’t change my mind. I asked, he gave me his explanation, and I wasn’t convinced. And I’ll leave it at that.”
When asked about what he thought of the VAR not intervening in that moment, Alonso said:
“When there are obvious errors, I like VAR intervention; when there aren’t, I understand it shouldn’t be involved. I don’t want to make a big deal out of the referee. It’s time to move on.”
Real Madrid, for their part, are preparing a dossier of these controversial decisions and plan to report the refereeing in La Liga to FIFA.
