Egyptian suggested he could leave club after falling out of favour with Arne Slot

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Leeds, in which the Egyptian started on the bench for the third straight match and played no part, Salah slammed the club, saying he felt he had been ‘thrown under the bus’ for poor recent form.

“I don't know why I'm sitting on the bench,” he said. “It feels like the club is throwing me under the bus, that's how I feel. This is not acceptable for me.”

It remains to be seen whether he will travel with Liverpool to face Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

Rooney has now criticised Salah’s outburst, saying he had let down the club and his team-mates as he left his legacy with the club in jeopardy.

"He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool,” declared the Manchester United legend on the Wayne Rooney Show podcast. “It would be sad for him to throw it all away. He's gone about it all wrong.

“Why? Why would you come out and say that?

“Listen, I think Mo Salah has been absolutely incredible for Liverpool. Last year when he was vocal about not signing a new contract or not being offered a new contract, what he had done, I think he deserved to get the money he gets playing for Liverpool, but then you can’t go flipping and saying what he said.

“I think it is absolutely disrespectful to his team-mates, to his manager, to the fans. I think it is incredible that he came out with what he did.

"Arne Slot has to show his authority and pull him in and say 'you are not travelling with the team, what you said is not acceptable'.

"Take yourself off to Afcon and let everything calm down. If I was him there would be no way he would be in the team."

He continued, rehashing earlier comments that Salah’s form had faded this season and that Arne Slot had every right to drop him from the side.

Mohamed Salah is not happy to have been left on the bench in recent weeks

“Time catches up with all of us when you’re playing, and I think this season he hasn’t looked at his best, hasn’t looked at his sharpest.

“I’ve been quite vocal about that over the last couple months, and clearly Arne Slot has seen that and put him on the bench.

“You want to see him roll his sleeves up and say ‘ok, I’ll show you.’

“The arrogance to say that he doesn’t have to earn his place because he should play [because] he’s already earned his place, you need to be at your best every week to try and stay in your team. That’s part of playing a team sport.

“If I was one of his team-mates, I wouldn’t be happy at all with what he said.

“This is where Liverpool need him most, and he’s throwing Liverpool under the bus with his words.”
