Wayne Rooney tells Chelsea fans what to expect from Liam Rosenior with appointment close

Wayne Rooney believes Liam Rosenior is ready to take charge at Chelsea, insisting he is “as good a coach as I’ve worked with.”

Standard Sport understands that Rosenior, currently manager of Strasbourg, has arrived in London for talks with the Chelsea hierarchy ahead of an expected appointment. It is hoped he will be in charge of the derby with Fulham on Wednesday.

Rooney, who worked with Rosenior at Derby County, knows his qualities well. Rosenior initially served as Rooney’s assistant before stepping in as interim manager in 2022 when Rooney departed. He later spent two years as Hull City manager, guiding the Tigers to the brink of the Sky Bet Championship play-offs before being dismissed in 2024.

Since moving to Strasbourg, Rosenior has impressed in Ligue 1, a club sharing the same ownership as Chelsea, solidifying his reputation as one of England’s most promising young coaches.

Speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said: “If he goes in there, he won't disappoint. He's been waiting for an opportunity like this. If you don't take it now, then you're never going to take it.

“And I think he's done his apprenticeship, he's done his work to try and get to that job. So he'll have no doubts in his mind that he's capable of doing that job. And hopefully, very soon, we hear that he is the manager, because for young English coaches I think it's massive.”

Rooney also praised Rosenior’s approach to coaching, adding: “He's taken chances and hopefully that pays off because I think Liam is as good a coach as I've ever worked with. His detail, how he approaches the day-to-day, he's as good as I've worked with.”
