Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “The defeat hurts a great deal and is frustrating. We didn’t play well and didn’t create enough chances. The one real chance we had was saved brilliantly by the goalkeeper. We had a lot of possession but no cutting edge, and then that’s not going to be enough. It’s difficult against opponents who defend deep and we didn’t play quickly enough. We have to play quicker and more direct in order to get more chances. Mainz were more aggressive, transitioned well, defended well and kept it tight. Now it’s about clearing our heads.” 

Head coach Albert Riera: “The players know why we didn’t get the result we wanted. We know where the mistakes lay, and why we conceded the goals and the opposition chances. We have to do better defensively and without the ball. It’s my responsibility to give the players options and solutions, which we’re working on in training. I have to give them even more tools.”

Jonathan Burkardt: “The game didn’t turn out the way we hoped. We were too sloppy in the key situations today. We gave too much away and didn’t create enough. As well as that, there was too much possession in areas where it’s not as important. We had more chances than we did against Hoffenheim – a few good ones too – but it still wasn’t enough. It’s a shame.”
