Speaking at Olympique de Marseille’s pre-match press conference attended by Get French Football News ahead of facing Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, England midfielder Angel Gomes (25) and Roberto De Zerbi spoke at length about Mason Greenwood (24) as the former Manchester United man faces an English team for the first time since departing the Premier League side. “It’s always special to play against English teams. Growing up in England, these are teams we’ve played before. Having family there, we know the match will be watched,” said Gomes on the occasion of facing Newcastle at the Stade Vélodrome. When asked about Mason Greenwood and any potential goal to be called up for the English national team, the OM midfielder replied, “I have not spoken to Mason in terms of what he wants to do. We speak about Call of Duty, FIFA, football – I have nothing to add to that.” For De Zerbi, it was a chance to address English media for the first time since leaving Brighton, and about Mason Greenwood. “I never get involved in players’ private lives – he paid a high price for what happened. He arrived in the right environment and behaved well.”“He is a very reserved person. I am saddened by what happened to him because I know someone very different from the person described in England.”Greenwood joined the club from Manchester United last summer in a deal worth up to 31.6m euros. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.GFFN | George Boxall – reporting from Stade Vélodrome, Marseille
