Tottenham Hotspur winger Matilda Vinberg says that the club are aiming to kick on from their successful season in 2023/2024.

The Lilywhites ended last season in sixth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table while they reached the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final for the very first time.

Spurs kick-off the 2024/2025 campaign with a home fixture against Crystal Palace on Sunday and winger Vinberg says that the club’s aim is to carry on the positive momentum from last year.

“It’s definitely one of our goals [to kick on], especially after how we finished last season and having reached the FA Cup final,” Vinberg said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event.

“We are going to take that [momentum] into this season. We are hoping to have more consistency in our league games. We want to be a top team in the WSL.”

Vinberg joined Spurs back in January upon the expiry of her contract with former club Hammarby IF. The player said that moving away from her native Sweden was tough but she felt well-supported by Spurs head coach Robert Vilahamn.

She said “It was definitely one of the biggest challenges that I faced, being away from home for the first time. I’d been living in Sweden for my whole life, so it was a big thing, a big step, but it was also something that I always dreamed about.

“I felt that it was the right time, especially having Robert as my coach because he’s Swedish as well. I had a safe feeling joining Spurs knowing that he knew me as a player and as a person. When I first came, we had a really good chat about things. He told me to not feel stressed and that it’d take time. It took time for him as well.

“The external factors were also very new for me; finding an apartment, practical stuff that you need to sort out when you move to England. There were a lot of things going on at the same time in the beginning.

“In the first few months, I struggled but I got through it. I didn’t feel stressed about getting into it straight away, I knew I had six months as like a warm-up before this full season.”

Having completed her first pre-season with Spurs, Vinberg is excited for the new campaign to get underway.

She said “I’m really excited. I have a good feeling about the squad, about the team and how we want to play. I’ve been able to get to know more about Robert’s ideas; he wants to play in different ways against different opponents. I’m really looking forward to it, I can’t wait.”
