Joe Gomez has lived almost an entire footballing life at Liverpool. He arrived in 2015 as a teenager of uncommon poise, a defender of speed, intelligence and quiet authority. Eleven years later, he stands at a crossroads.
The Liverpool defender turns 29 on the final weekend of the season, with only one year left on his contract. For a player once regarded as central to the club’s defensive future, the question now is not about ability. It is about rhythm, availability and opportunity.
Gomez has made 31 appearances this season, but only 15 starts. Across the last two campaigns, he has managed just 48 appearances, a number that reflects the frustrating stop start nature of his recent years.

Liverpool’s defensive picture is changing too. Jeremy Jacquet is set to arrive from Rennes in a £60m deal, while Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are both expected back after serious knee injuries. That leaves Gomez, still valued for his versatility across the back four, facing a more crowded route to regular football.
There remains a compelling case for Gomez. He is Liverpool’s longest serving player, a Premier League and Champions League winner, and one of the few defenders able to cover every role across the back line. In a long season, that sort of reliability has value.
Yet football moves quickly. Newcastle were linked last summer. AC Milan have been mentioned this season. At 29, Gomez may now need the one thing Liverpool can no longer guarantee, regular first team football.
Asked about what comes next, Gomez offered no certainty when speaking to the Liverpool Echo, only honesty.
“No. I think anything can happen. I don’t know is the honest answer.
“I’ve only got a year left so I don’t know, but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess.
“But I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I’ll always be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we’ll see.”
For Liverpool, this summer may bring another difficult farewell. For Gomez, it may bring the chance to begin again.
