On the rise for quite some time with SV Werder Bremen, Scottish striker Oliver Burke may end up extending with his current Bundesliga side after all. Werder head coach Ole Werner has handed the 27-year-old four consecutive league starts. Even if Burke hasn’t managed to get his name on the scoresheet since matchday 12, Werner seems especially pleased with the Scotsman’s improved defensive work.

Werner singled Burke out for praise at his Thursday pre-match press conference. Signs point to another start in this Saturday evening “Top-Spiel” against Eintracht Frankfurt. Other attacking options exist, but RB Leipzig loanee André Silva continues to disappoint. German youngsters Justin Njinmah and Keke Topp bring plenty of potential yet don’t necessarily bring Burke’s maturity.

“He simply makes his presence felt,” Werner remarked at the press conference. “He brings physicality and speed to the team. Everyone wants to play from the start, but Burke is currently in very good form and in very good shape. As a coach, one has to take that into account.”

It looks to be the case that Burke may have a long-term future with the Hanseaten. Kicker reports that Werder have prepared a contract extension offer. After two loan outs to Birmingham and Millwall, it appeared as if Burke would be departing on his expiring contract this summer.

Now, per Kicker, Werder have put together a two-year deal with plenty of performance incentives.
