Plymouth Argyle have reportedly made a fresh bid for Burton Albion striker Rumarn Burrell.
After suffering relegation from the Championship last season, it has been a busy summer for Plymouth as they prepare for life back in League One, with nine new signings arriving at Home Park so far.
The Pilgrims have lost star forward duo Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu this summer, but despite already signing two new strikers in Owen Oseni and Aribim Pepple, head coach Tom Cleverley has revealed that the club are "working really hard" to bring in another number nine, and it appears they could be getting closer to securing a deal for Burrell.
Burrell scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 34 appearances for Burton last season as Gary Bowyer's men narrowly avoided relegation from League One, and FLW exclusively revealed Argyle's interest in the 24-year-old earlier this month.
According to Sky Sports Transfer Centre (21st July, 12:23pm), Plymouth have made an improved bid believed to be close to £1 million for Burrell after their initial offer was rejected, and they are said to be "hopeful of concluding a deal" for the striker, who is keen to make the switch to Devon.
When asked for his thoughts on the potential signing of Burrell, FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge admitted that the Pilgrims are in desperate need of a new striker, and he claimed that the Jamaica international would be an exciting addition for the club.
"I think Burrell would be a fantastic signing for Argyle," Luke told FLW.
"There's no hiding the fact that we've been after a number nine, everybody at Argyle knows that, and Tom Cleverley has stated that.
"I think if we can get the deal done and over the line, I think he will be our number nine moving forward.
"He's only 24 years old and has stacks of room for development and improvement.
"Burton fans were saying that he's an exciting prospect, and he's only going to get better.
"He's something we haven't got at Argyle.
"We've signed a couple of youngsters in Aribim Pepple and Owen Oseni, but neither of them are out-and-out number nines.
"They can play along the front line and do a job there, but the one thing about Burrell is he's quick and he is a number nine, and that's something we're desperate for at the club.
"Apparently we put a bid in for him a couple of weeks ago that got rejected, and we were going to walk away, but as time has gone on and the clock's ticking, if it's true that we've put a new offer in, hopefully we can get the deal over the line.
"I think it will get done.
"Hopefully he can join up with the squad as soon as possible and hit the ground running.
"Fingers crossed it all gets done as he would be a very good signing for Argyle.
"I'm hopeful there will still be a few more through the door, and we've also got the loan market to be looking at, so it's exciting times."
After hitting 24 goals in 42 games for Cove Rangers in Scottish League One in the 2023-24 season, it took Burrell a little while to find his feet after his move to Burton last summer.
However, Burrell exploded into life for the Brewers in the second half of the season to help them complete the great escape, with all of his 11 goals coming after the turn of the year, so it is easy to see why he has emerged on Plymouth's radar.
Having already signed two relatively unproven strikers in Oseni and Pepple this summer, the Pilgrims are taking something of a risk by offering a near seven-figure fee for Burrell, but if he can replicate the form he showed in the final months of last season, he could prove to be a shrewd signing for the club.
