England midfielder Jordan Henderson has defended Thomas Tuchel’s selections for his 26-man World Cup squad.
The Three Lions have now landed in Florida as preparations for the tournament ramp up at their warmup camp. However, a number of noteworthy players are not amongst them. Omissions from the squad include the likes of Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and other stars.
“I know everybody likes to speak about players that aren’t here,” admitted Henderson. “Unfortunately that’s the case with every England squad. There’s so many good players, so much talent.
“But for us as a squad here, it’s about being together. We’re here for a reason.”
Henderson was called up for the tournament despite making just seven starts for Brentford in the second half of the Premier League season. It will be the 35-year-old’s fourth World Cup and Tuchel evidently feels his experience will be invaluable.
The midfielder continued: “It’s about bringing that – being the best version of yourself, being the best version individually and collectively.
“Working every day to achieve our dreams really, and to do that, we’ll have to be on it every day.
“We’ll have to be ready to sacrifice for each other. We’ll have to be ready to do all the invisible work, as the gaffer says, and just be there to support each other.
“We all know the talent this squad has, and what we can do and how we can hurt teams.
“So, yes, it’s exciting, but there’s a lot of work to be done, and we’re just looking forward to getting going.”
