The Tractor Boys moved two points clear of third place Millwall courtesy of goals from Jaden Philogene and George Hirst to seal a 2-0 victory at Carrow Road.

Kieran McKenna’s side also have two games in hand, putting them in pole position to join Coventry City in the top flight over Middlesbrough and Millwall.

Neither club have confirmed their promotion, but Frank Lampard’s side just need one point from their final four games, while Ipswich need 11 from their final six.

The Suffolk outfit finished 19th in the Premier League table last season in what was their first year back at that level since 2002.

The club are now hoping that the wait for top flight football will not be as long this time around, with their fate firmly in their own hands following a recent upturn in form.

Wes Burns issues message to Ipswich fans

Burns has celebrated the victory over Norwich with a post on social media praising the squad and fans with a picture of the team in front of a packed away end.

This was Ipswich’s first win at Carrow Road since November 2006, and their first league double over their rivals in 33 years, which supporters and players have enjoyed alike.

“Incredible group. Incredible weekend,” wrote Burns, via his Instagram stories.

Burns is in his fifth season with Ipswich, having joined the club in the 2021 summer transfer window from Fleetwood Town.

The Welshman has been a part of the club’s rise from League One to the Premier League, helping the team gain promotion in 2023 and 2024.

However, his game time has been limited this season in McKenna’s side, with the 31-year-old playing just 15 times so far in the Championship after returning from a long-term injury absence.

Burns has been a versatile figure at Portman Road, but he was not involved in the 2-0 victory against Norwich, with his last appearance coming in the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on 13 March.

Ipswich are now two points clear of third place Millwall and three ahead of fourth place Middlesbrough, while having two games in hand.

The first of those extra fixtures will take place on Tuesday night, with McKenna’s side set to travel to Fratton Park to take on Portsmouth.

Victory will put Ipswich five ahead of Millwall, who have just four games remaining.

Norwich victory has opened the path to promotion for Ipswich

Ipswich gained massively over the weekend with both Millwall and Middlesbrough failing to win.

Completing a first double over Norwich in 33 years, and a first win at Carrow Road in 20 years, could prove the moment that gave the Tractor Boys their place back in the Premier League.

There is still work to be done over the next few weeks, but a victory against Portsmouth on Tuesday would have them with one foot in the top flight.

While Burns has fallen down the pecking order this year, this post highlights the togetherness of McKenna’s team, and the support they have from fans during their fight for promotion.
