Roma full-back Wesley has been ruled out of the World Cup with a grade three injury to his left thigh, a setback that denies Flamengo a significant FIFA payment linked to his participation.

According to Coluna Do Fla, FIFA pays 5,000 dollars per day to clubs for each player called up, with the benefits programme covering any team the footballer has represented in the previous 24 months, counted from 11 June 2024.

Wesley remained contracted to Flamengo until July 2025 before his move to Roma, so the Rio side would have earned around 2,700 dollars per day from his call-up. His withdrawal means that money will not be due.

Even so, Flamengo have nine players at the 2026 tournament, with FIFA set to pay R$ 231.3 thousand per day to the club. For the group stage alone, the total is about 1.44 million dollars, R$ 7.4 million, and it could increase if Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay reach the knockouts.

Carlo Ancelotti has selected four Flamengo players for Brazil, namely Danilo, Alex Sandro, Léo Pereira and Lucas Paquetá. Uruguay have called Arrascaeta, De La Cruz and Varela, Colombia include Jorge Carrascal, and Ecuador have Gonzalo Plata.

The squad are on a break during the World Cup pause. Flamengo’s next fixture is on 22 July against Chapecoense in the 19th round of the Brasileirão, after a training camp in Portugal featuring friendlies with Falkirk, Birmingham and Benfica.
