West Brom are moving to make early headway as the window opens on Monday, working on deals for a striker and a defender. The Baggies are pushing to get business done quickly.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Chelsea forward Jimmy-Jay Morgan is close to joining in a move worth about £1.3m. The 20-year-old England youth international hit 14 goals on loan at Peterborough in League One last season and is viewed as capable of stepping up to the Championship.

Albion are also close to signing 19-year-old Liverpool defender Carter Pinnington. He is regarded as a high-potential addition and will initially link up with the under-21s.

The Morgan move is seen internally as a statement of intent, with Albion adopting a front-foot approach this summer. After owners Bilkul arrived in February 2024, profit and sustainability pressures meant sales were needed before buys, alongside a tidy trading profit.

That groundwork should now allow a more proactive pursuit of targets. Head coach James Morrison has remained in regular contact with director of football operations Ian Pearce and technical director Dominic Price through the summer.

Goalkeeper Max O’Leary is the only player to have agreed terms so far, signing a three-year contract. The club remain hopeful of keeping striker Josh Maja and forward Karlan Grant.

The coaching staff will also be finalised, with Morrison keen for Matt Gill to stay as his assistant on a permanent basis. Morrison has underlined that recruitment must prioritise quality rather than quantity.
