According to ExpressAndStar.com, West Brom are in talks to hire long-time Celtic coach Gavin Strachan as part of James Morrison’s backroom revamp.
Morrison is keen to bring the 47-year-old, the son of Scotland great Gordon, to The Hawthorns as he finalises plans for his first full season in management.
Strachan has spent the past six years on Celtic’s staff, working under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers and most recently Martin O’Neill. A former midfielder with spells at Coventry and Hartlepool, he previously served as Darren Ferguson’s assistant at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough.
Morrison has been moving to lock in his coaching team before pre-season. He remains hopeful Matt Gill will stay after the pair combined to keep the Baggies in the Championship during the run-in.
He is also interested in recruiting former Middlesbrough team-mate Tony McMahon. McMahon, who played alongside Morrison in Boro’s 2004 FA Youth Cup-winning side, was most recently director of football at York City.
Morrison, 40, was confirmed as permanent head coach at the end of the season and had indicated a summer reshuffle was likely. During the run-in he met potential additions but decided there was no need to make changes at that stage.
Albion are also closing in on their first summer signings, strikers Barney Stewart and Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Stewart is poised to join from Falkirk for a seven-figure fee, with 20-year-old Morgan set to arrive from Chelsea for around £1.3 million.
