West Bromwich Albion are facing up to a potentially big summer of recruitment, regardless of whether they find themselves in the Championship or the Premier League.

The current squad at The Hawthorns resembles a strong blend of youth and experience, although some would argue that with the quality possessed throughout the ranks, the current Championship season has been somewhat underwhelming.

Drawing far too many games has been the story of Albion's campaign under both Carlos Corberan and Tony Mowbray, and will be pinpointed as the major downfall if the Baggies are unable to secure a spot in the play-offs for the second successive campaign.

Despite not having the greatest amount of financial flexibility, there have been signs during Shilen Patel's first two transfer windows as owner that the West Midlands side are heading in the right direction when it comes to making savvy additions and potential statement signings, although the loan deal for Adam Armstrong in January hasn't exactly gone according to plan when taking the striker's previous second tier exploits into account.

With this in mind, Football League World asked our Albion fan pundit, Callum Burgess, what would make a successful summer transfer window in B71.

Experienced trio tipped for West Brom departures with previous trend in mind

Last summer, supporters saw plenty of experienced players depart the club after defeat in the play-off semi-finals to Southampton, which included Matt Phillips, Adam Reach, Martin Kelly, Nathaniel Chalobah, Yann M'Vila and Erik Pieters.

Last season, West Brom had the highest average age in the second tier with a figure of 27.6, which has been slightly reduced to 26.4 - currently the joint-fourth oldest squad in the division.

Burgess would like to see this trend continue, especially with the four permanent players currently set to leave the club at the end of the season all over the age of 25.

"A successful summer transfer window would be another where the emphasis is looking to bring down the average age of the squad with the likes of Kyle Bartley (before his contract was extended until 2026 through a performance-based clause), John Swift and Semi Ajayi all (set to be) leaving the club in the summer," he told FLW.

"With their contracts set to expire, it gives the opportunity to get more youth into the side, like we have done with Isaac Price previously.

"I would expect to see Tom Fellows leave, which is definitely a downside," Burgess claimed. "But, you'd probably get a decent amount for him which could be reinvested and give an opportunity for us to find more hidden gems, like we have done with Torbjorn Heggem for example.

"I'd probably say that we need more mobility in midfield, like we have got with Isaac Price. I think Mowatt's legs are starting to go," he stated.

"I'd like to see another midfielder come in, probably a centre-back and a full-back as well," he added. "With Lankshear and Armstrong's loans expiring, you'd probably need another striker as a minimum."

"There's the potential for it to be an exciting summer at Albion despite a few outgoings which will be tough to deal with. But, I've got confidence that the club will be able to navigate through them," Burgess concluded.

West Bromwich Albion must continue multiple trends to aid success

There's no denying that the likes of Bartley, Ajayi and Swift have been good servants to West Brom and their experience has been extremely beneficial throughout an interesting spell in the club's recent history.

However, if the club are to progress forward, whether Mowbray is in charge for the long-term or not, fresh blood is likely to be required, especially as they could save an estimated weekly figure of approximately £53,000 per week on the trio, according to Capology figures.

Everton were unable to complete a deal to sign Fellows in the latter stages of the window despite initially agreeing a reported £10m fee, and it is likely that the winger's price-tag would have increased in the meantime after a continuation of strong performances and the potential for a bidding war as the Toffees continue to track the England youth international.

However, if an eight-figure fee was to be agreed, there are plenty of areas within the squad which would benefit from reinforcements, and whilst supporters would potentially hope for a star name to be signed with such resources, the additions of Price and Heggem have proven that the Baggies have been largely successful when tracking relative unknowns within the English game.
