Albion youngster Akeel Higgins is poised to seal a permanent move to Wigan Athletic, according to ExpressAndStar.com.
The attacker, who turns 21 this month, is out of contract at The Hawthorns this summer and is set to join on a free, with Albion inserting a future sell-on. He had been offered fresh terms earlier in the summer, but the club are content for him to seek a kickstart to his senior career.
Higgins joined Albion at under-13s and made one senior appearance for the Baggies, coming on as a teenager in the FA Cup tie against Aldershot in January 2024.
He also featured on Carlos Corberan’s first-team bench after impressing for the under-18s and under-21s. He will reunite with Gary Caldwell, who took him on loan to Exeter City in League One last season.
That spell brought 31 outings, including nine starts, with 27 appearances in the third tier. He scored twice, his first senior goal arriving in a south coast derby win over Plymouth.
Other Albion under-21s out of contract after last season included goalkeepers Ben Cisse and Brian Okonkwo, defender Jamal Mohammed and forward Jaiden Francis-Caesar.
