With off-field ownership issues still a talking point, it has been difficult for Nuno Espírito Santo and the recruitment team to get to work on building a squad that can bounce straight back to the Premier League.

And, it seems West Ham are making progress on that front, as Dutch media outlet AD has revealed that they are looking likely to be the most serious suitors for Parrott.

The update explains that the Ireland international has been on the radar of a host of clubs, but Real Betis have now dropped out of the race for his signature, and West Ham are seemingly willing to meet the asking price of €30m set by the Eredivisie side.

That would be a significant outlay for the Hammers, especially as a Championship side, but Parrott has been outstanding for AZ in recent years.

The former Spurs man found the net 14 times in his first season with the club, before hitting 16 in 28 league games last season, along with 10 in 15 in the Conference League.

As well as that, Parrott has established himself as a key player for Ireland, with his memorable hat-trick against Hungary last year one that will be remembered for a long time.

There’s no denying that this would be a statement signing for West Ham, and some may be surprised that Parrott would even be keen on moving to a Championship club, but that shows the size of the Hammers, and the appeal of the project at the London Stadium.

His performances for AZ, both in Europe and domestically, have been very good for a few years, and he is also flourishing on the international stage.

At 24, Parrott still has room to improve, so whilst €30m is a huge fee, if Parrott helps West Ham to promotion, and then keeps them in the top flight, it will turn out to be a bargain.

It’s pretty clear that Nuno needs attacking reinforcements, and Parrott’s all-round game could make him the ideal option to spearhead this team.

He is very capable at linking play, and his intelligence and movement would also benefit someone like Jarrod Bowen, who will certainly hope that West Ham can get this deal over the line.

After a slow start to the window, with the focus on outgoings, West Ham do need to improve the squad, and if they can get Parrott over the line it would be a statement addition in their push for promotion.
