West Ham have confirmed Nuno Espirito Santo will stay on as head coach despite relegation being sealed on the final day, the club said in a statement.
The Hammers beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium on Sunday, yet still went down after Tottenham Hotspur won at home to Everton. Leeds had long been safe and finished 14th on 47 points.
Nuno held post-relegation talks with senior figures on Monday amid reports of a split, but the decision was made to retain him.
Planning for next season began immediately after the final whistle, with Nuno committed to leading an immediate promotion push back to the top flight. He has one previous Championship season on his CV, winning the 2018 title with Wolverhampton Wanderers on 99 points.
West Ham’s final 17 Premier League matches yielded 25 points, a rate that would equate to seventh across a full campaign. The squad’s mentality and togetherness have also improved since January, factors backing the club’s stance.
