Ollie Scarles the lone bright spark for flat Hammers as teenager continues to go from strength to strength
West Ham remain 16th in the Premier League table after they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle at the London Stadium.
Tomas Soucek’s volley, blazed over the crossbar inside the first 50 seconds, proved to be the closest the Hammers came to scoring in Monday night’s encounter.
Instead, Newcastle head back to the North East with all three points after a second-half volley from captain Bruno Guimaraes decided the match.
Standard Sport’s Dom Smith was at the London Stadium to rate the West Ham players’ performances…
Alphonse Areola 7
Couldn’t be faulted for the goal, which came after he had made two smart saves from Harvey Barnes and one exceptional stop from his own team-mate in Max Kilman.
Jean-Clair Todibo 6
An encouraging performance from the Frenchman, who is gradually improving.
Max Kilman 4
Claimed he was pushed for the winner, which would have been a very soft refereeing decision, and nearly scored a freakish own goal.
Aaron Cresswell 4
Not his best outing in terms of pass accuracy, and was hooked before 70 minutes as manager Graham Potter turned to Evan Ferguson.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6
Up against a weakened left flank for Newcastle, without Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon, and marshalled their stand-ins well.
Tomas Soucek 5
Should have put the Hammers into the lead inside 50 seconds when he skied a huge chance.
Edson Alvarez 4
Not a good display from the erratic midfielder, who carried the ball well but always tended to struggle with what to do next.
James Ward-Prowse 5
Some tidy moments, and some moments when Newcastle players strode past him too easily.
Ollie Scarles 7
Another assured performance. Constantly looking to overlap down the left flank. A shrewd passer and diligent defender with a bright future ahead of him.
Jarrod Bowen 5
Struck very weakly on goal in the first half and at times felt out of sync with strike partner Mohammed Kudus. Beat his man a couple of times, but not often enough.
Mohammed Kudus 6
No lack of fight from the Ghanaian, who was exposed at times but tried to make things happen. Still, needs to be more clinical in the final third.
Carlos Soler (Alvarez, 65’) 5
Kept close attention on Joelinton when he came on. Hard to see how many starts he will get between now and the end of the season.
Konstantinos Mavropanos (Todibo, 65’) 5
Moved to the right centre-back position. Had very few touches.
Lucas Paqueta (Soucek, 65’) 5
Came deep to receive the ball, but was rarely used.
Evan Ferguson (Cresswell, 69’) 5
Didn’t see much of the ball.
Danny Ings (Ward-Prowse, 84’) N/A
Not used: Fabianski, Guilherme, Rodriguez, Emerson
