West Ham will be playing Championship football next season after their fight for survival ended in disappointment, despite a 3-0 win over Leeds United at the London Stadium on the final day of the campaign.
The Hammers entered the afternoon knowing victory alone would not be enough. They also needed Everton to take points off Tottenham, but that result never arrived as Spurs held on to secure their own safety.
With temperatures soaring and tension around the ground obvious from the start, West Ham looked flat for large periods of the first half. Leeds, already safe from relegation, played with more freedom and threatened on a few occasions, while the hosts struggled to create clear openings.
The game finally sparked into life after the break when Taty Castellanos nodded home from a Jarrod Bowen corner to give the home crowd some hope. Bowen then produced a brilliant finish from a tight angle to double the advantage and briefly raise belief around the stadium.
Callum Wilson added a late third goal in stoppage time to complete the victory, but celebrations never came. News of Tottenham’s win over Everton soon filtered through, confirming the end of West Ham’s 14-year spell in the Premier League and sealing a painful drop into the second tier.
