West Ham need to separate Nelson’s reputation from his recent output. During his 2025/26 loan spell at Brentford, he managed only 10 Premier League appearances, every one from the bench, playing just 125 league minutes and supplying one assist. His only goal arrived in the EFL Cup against Grimsby Town.

Those numbers don’t paint the picture of a player ready to command a sizeable transfer fee. They reflect a footballer who never established momentum because opportunities were scarce. Even so, there is still enough natural ability to suggest he could thrive with regular starts at Championship level.

West Ham United hold the stronger hand

Nuno Espírito Santo needs genuine pace after Crysencio Summerville’s departure, and West Ham still lack natural width despite entering August without a permanent signing. Nelson can play on either wing, understands English football and wants to remain in London, making the move sensible from a football perspective. Money changes the conversation.
