West Ham United host Newcastle United on Sunday. This has become a critical match for new manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
The Hammers are in dire form. They are currently winless in their last six league games and rooted in the relegation zone. Consequently, pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach. He has lost his last three games. In fact, he has never lost four consecutively as a Premier League manager.
The London Stadium has offered no comfort. West Ham have lost all their home league games this season. Worse still, they have conceded 12 goals in the process. They now face a Newcastle side that has an exceptional record at this venue. Therefore, Nuno must find a way to fix a defence that has conceded the most goals in the league (20) if he is to secure a vital result.
Nuno Espírito Santo will be without three players for Sunday’s clash. He confirmed that defender Dinos Mavropanos (leg) and striker Niclas Füllkrug (leg) are both unavailable. However, the manager is optimistic neither will be out for an extended period. Both players have already resumed light work on the grass.
The pair are joined on the sidelines by young full-back Ollie Scarles. Scarles is currently recovering after undergoing successful surgery on a broken collarbone.
Nuno has hinted at potential changes to his starting XI. This follows the poor performance in the defeat at Elland Road. Several substitutes made a strong case for inclusion in that game. For instance, Mateus Fernandes impressed by scoring after coming on. Callum Wilson, Freddie Potts, Soungoutou Magassa, and Kyle Walker-Peters also provided fresh energy and are pushing for starts.
West Ham United predicted XI: Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Diouf; Magassa, Soucek; Bowen, Paquetá, Summerville; Wilson
