Birmingham City striker Marvin Ducksch has revealed his thoughts on leaving the club this summer amid intense transfer speculation

A seismic summer transfer window awaits Birmingham City ahead of the club’s second campaign back in the Championship, in which ambitious owners Knighthead will be seeking to equip Chris Davies with the tools to build a squad capable of competing for promotion.

Expectations have been high both internally and externally and while Blues did fall short of launching a serious pursuit of successive promotions after romping to the League One title, there is tangible hope that Davies’ outfit can build upon a respectable 10th-placed finish as a decisive window looms.

Birmingham must strengthen in key areas and Davies will receive the backing to make a splash in the market once again, with the Second City side having spent lavishly since Knighthead’s takeover of the club.

There will also be player departures to deal with, though, and one player who appears increasingly likely to be heading towards the exit door at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park is Marvin Ducksch.

The two-cap German international joined Birmingham in an eye-catching deal from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen last summer and endured a mixed debut campaign in English football, as he would ultimately finish as the team’s joint-top goalscorer with 11 strikes across all competitions but lost his place in the side to January arrival August Priske and found himself at the centre of controversy after being arrested for drink-driving in April.

Ducksch’s future in the West Midlands is shrouded in uncertainty at this moment of time and, following links to a number of clubs back in Germany and on the continent, the 32-year-old has discussed transfer interest and how he really feels about leaving Blues in a fresh development.

Ducksch appears to have a variety of suitors, with the likes of Real Sociedad, AEK Athens and Hertha Berlin having all been touted to make moves for the striker in recent months.

With his contract at Birmingham also containing a reported €1 million release clause after the club failed to achieve promotion, various sides are trying to capitalise on that as the possibility of a swift exit less than twelve months on from his switch to B9 continues to loom large.

Ducksch himself has now confirmed the reported interest in his signature, detailing talks with several clubs including some in the Bundesliga.

The forward, having registered an impressive combined return of 32 goals and 23 assists across three Bundesliga campaigns prior to joining Birmingham, has revealed that he would “definitely like” to return to the German top-flight if the right proposal and project presents itself in the coming weeks and months.

Speaking on German podcast At Broski – Die Sport-Show, Ducksch broke his silence by explaining: "I’m definitely in talks with several clubs, including some in the Bundesliga. But it’s still relatively early.

"I’m relatively open to that.

"But of course, if there’s a club where I’m convinced by the whole concept, then I would definitely like to return to the Bundesliga or to Germany."

Marvin Ducksch's Birmingham City exit would be ideal for all parties

At this stage, an exit would undoubtedly prove the best course of action for all parties as Birmingham look to upgrade on Ducksch while the former Borussia Dortmund attacker pursues a move back to his homeland.

It’s clear that he’s not entirely happy at Birmingham and is holding out for a Bundesliga return, with reduced minutes during the latter stages of the season indicating Blues’ stance on the frontman.

He’s not a part of the club’s long-term plans given his age, while Davies has preferred to utilise Priske following his arrival at the start of the year and Ducksch’s issues away from the field will have hardly helped matters either.

There are some assets who Birmingham must seek to retain this summer, such as in-demand winger Demarai Gray, but Ducksch is simply not one of them and, despite showing clear flashes of goalscoring quality throughout the 2025/26 term, he hasn’t quite met the heights and a departure this summer would perhaps benefit all involved.
