Southampton are set to retain Tonda Eckert pending the outcome of an FA investigation.
The German head coach has received full backing from Chairman Dragan Solak as they prepare for another season in England’s second tier.
Solak’s stance was clear: “My personal opinion, and the opinion of the board, is that he is a manager who deserves to be backed by us and to be supported by us.”
From a purely footballing perspective, the decision is understandable. Taking the Saints from 21st to 4th, with a 63% win ratio, emphasises his ability to yield success.
Yet, his on-pitch success has been tarnished by actions off the pitch. The ‘Spygate’ saga has revealed naivety and rightly raised the question of his potential sacking. Whether that will be the case looks set to be decided by the ongoing FA investigation.
However, the EFL panel described the spying as a “contrived and determined plan from the top down”, with evidence that staff felt pressured and that Eckert himself “loved it” when the information was reported to him.
Solak acknowledged the possible repercussions of “[losing] our chance to win £200m”, while also signalling support for the young manager. “But if they’re going to go again and then double that with [a] ban, we might appeal. But he will have my support through the process. But if he’s banned, he’s banned. I mean, I can’t put somebody to manage the club if he is not allowed.”
Just today, several characteristics of Solak’s ownership style have been revealed.
He’s opted for loyalty and, more importantly, stability. Viewing Eckert as “super talented”, Solak has avoided a knee-jerk reaction for the long term. Last season, Eckert had always emphasised his focus towards the next game. His relentless pursuit of the playoffs had steered Southampton to promotion contention.
Solak’s comments strongly suggest he is willing to give Eckert a second chance. With promotion already missed, next season is now critical for Sport Republic. Sticking with a proven, adaptable manager carries less risk than starting again with a new appointment.
Solak and the board have, however, gambled that Eckert will continue on his upward trajectory after this episode. Support has gathered recently for Eckert – a result of media attention cooling down alongside his apology to the fans. Though results are a must, and considering the four-point deduction, the German head coach will already be fighting an uphill battle for promotion. All while aiming to fix his reputation and relationship with the supporters, players and the club as a whole.
If a poor start indeed occurs, intense scrutiny will inevitably follow.
Eckert’s apology may win back some supporters who valued his impact last season and the transparency he’s provided. Others will remain angry about the breach, the lost Premier League opportunity, and what they see as insufficient accountability. A memorable cup run alongside an unbeaten league run, where fans travelled up and down the country, now feels tainted.
Eckert aimed to provide “context” for the scandal. While he assured it wasn’t an “excuse”, he shifted the perspective to his background in European football.
“When I worked in Italy for 4 years… our training sessions have always been observed. “There’s different rules in England; there’s different rules from the EFL, and I should have known them.”
Reports have circulated that he has retained the support of the majority of the players — a potentially crucial factor for his current support from the Saints hierarchy.
Today’s messages aim to close the chapter, but it could be far from over. Contract renewals and retaining key players would be a monumental step in looking to earn trust and belief back into the club.
The FA investigation remains the biggest cloud. A personal ban for Eckert will force Solak’s hand. Even without one, the club must navigate the points deduction and the lingering ‘cheating’ label from rivals and the media. Certain fans online have called for a siege mentality — something not typical of Southampton…
How the club conducts itself over the next few weeks and months will determine if this becomes a one-off embarrassment or a lasting stain.
