Sporting CP welcome Arsenal to Lisbon for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The Portuguese champions host the Premier League leaders at The Estádio José Alvalade this evening. Sporting are into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1983, while Arsenal are hoping to progress to the final four of the Champions League for the second straight season.

Mikel Arteta’s team arrive in the Portuguese capital on the back of successive defeats. Arsenal were eliminated from the FA Cup by second-tier Southampton at the weekend, a result that followed their League Cup final loss to Manchester City.

Arteta has insisted that recent results do not heighten the importance of tonight’s tie.

“I think it doesn’t change it, I mean, regardless this is the quarter-finals of the Champions League, it doesn’t get much better than that,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference.

“We worked so hard throughout the season to be in this position in the competition. We’re going to play an opponent here that we know about, their record and what they’ve done. So we are hungrier than ever, very excited and very, very motivated for tomorrow’s game.”
