Willum Willumsson left Birmingham City to join high-flying Dutch side Nijmegen in the January transfer window.

Birmingham City had a very busy January transfer window as Chris Davies looked to reshape his squad to help their push for promotion.

Kai Wagner, Jhon Solis, Carlos Vicente, Ibrahim Osman and August Priske were added to a squad that already boasted plenty of talent, but, sadly for Blues, it hasn’t brought the instant success they wanted.

Whilst those players have all made different contributions, the reality is that Birmingham look certain to miss out on the play-offs, so the January gamble backfired.

Willum Willumsson has struggled since leaving Birmingham City in January

Naturally, bringing in so many players meant departures were inevitable as well, and Willum Willumsson was among those to secure a move away earlier in the year.

The attacking midfielder arrived in the summer of 2024 from Go Ahead Eagles with a good reputation after impressing in the Dutch top flight, and he featured regularly as Blues won the League One title last season.

However, he found game time much more difficult to come by in the current campaign, and he had fallen down the pecking order under Chris Davies.

So, a January move suited all parties, and it was no surprise that Willumsson sealed a return to the Netherlands, with Nijmegen finalising a permanent move for the Icelandic international on a two-and-a-half year contract.

The 27-year-old was joining a Nijmegen team that are massively overachieving this season, so it was always going to be difficult to get into the XI straight away.

That has proven to be the case as well, as he has made just four Eredivisie appearances, with three of them coming off the bench, and he has been an unused sub for four games on the bounce.

But, with Nijmegen unbeaten in that period, which includes two wins against runaway leaders PSV in the league and cup, Willumsson’s situation is unlikely to change in the short-term at least.

Willum Willumsson will hope to rediscover his best form at Nijmegen

That impressive run means Nijmegen are third in the table, just three points behind Feyenoord, who currently occupy the second Champions League spot, whilst they face Alkmaar in the cup final in April.

So, it’s an exciting time to be part of the squad, and Willumsson will hope to take any opportunities that come his way over the coming weeks and months.

If the side reaches Europe, which seems highly likely in some capacity, Willumsson will feel it vindicates his decision to leave Blues, and the busier schedule next season will ensure he is given more game time.

Like all attacking players, Willumsson will be judged on goals and assists, so the fact he is yet to get off the mark will be frustrating for the player.

However, it’s still very early days in his career with Nijmegen, and Willumsson will feel there is a lot more to come.

As for Birmingham, the lack of impact Willumsson has made means they aren’t exactly regretting his exit despite their own struggles, and all connected to the club will no doubt wish the player well moving forward as he did play his part in their record-breaking title win last season.
