The defensive personnel situation continues to preoccupy FC Bayern, with Dayot Upamecano ’s condition in particular coming into focus ahead of the next Champions League appearance. Now there is a first positive sign from training.

The centre-back was back on the pitch for the first time on Sunday and completed a light individual session, as observed by BILD. Upamecano is to be carefully reintroduced to the workload with the aim of being an option again in time for Wednesday’s game against PSV. A call-up is therefore at least not ruled out.

The Frenchman has been absent from the last two matches due to illness. He had to miss the Champions League home game against Union Saint-Gilloise at short notice, as well as the match against FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga. For coach Vincent Kompany, this meant repeated changes in defence.

Without Upamecano, the Bayern coach opted for Minjae Kim in central defence. The 27-year-old lacked the usual stability he had embodied in recent months, particularly in defence. This makes it all the more important for the defender to return quickly in an intense phase of the season.

Upamecano’s future remains an ongoing issue

Parallel to the sporting question, his future also remains an issue. The centre-back has had a contract offer ready to be signed for weeks. According to information from SPORT1, impatience is growing internally and a decision is still a long time coming. Upamecano himself publicly refers to his advisor and is keeping a low profile.

Coach Kompany recently made it clear how important the Frenchman is to him: „Since I’ve been here, Upa has been very, very consistent. If he has to pick a phase of his career in which he was so good, I believe that this is his best phase.“

Sporting director Max Eberl was recently cautious: „We have said: We are waiting for Upa’s answer, that is the only thing that counts. And we are waiting for that.“

For the time being, however, the focus is on the pitch. Whether Upamecano will be fit again against PSV or will continue to train individually will be decided at short notice. As Bayern have already secured their ticket for a direct place in the round of 16, Munich are unlikely to take any risks.
