After nine seasons Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool this summer, and his place among the club’s greats is secure. According to L'Équipe, he will sit alongside Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Graeme Souness and Ian Rush.

Signed from Roma in 2017 for about €40m, he departs as a transformative forward. Some even place him in the top three, while Dalglish remains untouchable with six titles as a player, the last as player-manager, plus two as manager and three European Cups.

The numbers back it up. His 255 goals make him Liverpool’s third highest scorer, behind Rush on 346 and Roger Hunt on 285. He has 189 Premier League goals for Liverpool, only Harry Kane has more for one club with 213.

His honours arrived without a decade of domestic dominance. He won the Champions League in 2019, that forward trident then delivered the Premier League the next year, and after Firmino and Mané left and Jürgen Klopp made way for Arne Slot, Salah’s 2024-25 season yielded a second league title. He also lifted the FA Cup in 2022, the League Cup in 2022 and 2024, the Community Shield in 2022 and the Club World Cup in 2019.

Andy Robertson has called him the greatest. Tony Evans is more cautious, putting Salah in or near the top five with John Barnes, Souness and Gerrard, and even edging him above Rush for impact and for challenging stereotypes about African players as Muslims faced a tougher climate.
