Where on Earth is Fraser Thornton the Rangers chairman? | OneFootball

Chairman Fraser Thornton has rather gone under the radar since being appointed as rangers supremo.

The businessman was announced out of the blue as Rangers new chairman a number of weeks ago and has not addressed the press in any level since.

Indeed, the only real reference made to him is by new CEO Patrick Stewart whereby he admits the chairman as a borderline lame duck.

Thornton is non-executive  — unlike predecessors John Bennett and Douglas Park he has no executive remit and is borderline symbolic.

His one definite credit as he is an actual rangers fan so that is at least something reassuring but the fact is he has little power other than a voice.

The only executive that Rangers have is Patrick Stewart and while he answers to the rest of the board he is the one with the power to press the big red button.

Thornton is effectively just in an advisory role. A non-executive chairman has no real clout in the boardroom more than any standard non-executive director does.

We do believe this is a mistake that Thornton should also be executive so there’s opposition of command between himself and the CEO. By giving the reins to the CEO alone while he is technically accountable to his actions and for them, he is still the only one with that power.

We feel that rangers felt under pressure to appoint somebody as a chairman but didn’t trust Thornton enough to give him executive power

As we said earlier, Thornton’s profile at Rangers has been borderline non existent so far.

We’ve seen him in the directors box, but he is otherwise in the shadows. Patrick Stewart and indeed Clement have been the faces of Rangers recently. Surely the chairman should be among this as well.

We will see if Thornton emerges from the background at all.
