Ahead of the Champions League Matchday 3 against Spurs (Wednesday, 9 p.m. at the Stade Louis-II), we take a look at the ten players who have worn the jerseys of both teams during their careers.
One English club will lead to another. After Manchester City three weeks ago, it’s the turn of Tottenham to come and tread the pitch at the Stade Louis-II, this Wednesday (9 p.m.), for the third day of the Champions League. It’s a match which could allow the Rouge et Blanc to obtain a first victory and in which would have certainly liked to take part in one Eric Dier, who is unfortunately injured.
And for good reason, as the central defender who arrived this summer at AS Monaco, scoring against the Citizens, also played for Tottenham from 2014 to 2024, appearing in nearly 370 matches, including a Champions League final in 2019. The Briton is thus part of a list of ten players to have played for both teams during their career. Here’s an overview. 🔍
How could we start without mentioning someone other than Glenn Hoddle? A true legend at Spurs, where he is the fifth most capped player with 490 appearances between 1975 and 1987, scoring 110 goals, the number 10 then joined the Principality club, where he would also leave his mark. Recruited by Arsène Wenger in 1987, the playmaker stayed for four seasons and appeared in 69 matches, winning the French league title in 1988 and the Coupe de France in 1991.
The Englishman unfortunately did not rub shoulders with Jürgen Klinsmann, who arrived a season later. A true fox in the box, the striker scored 35 times in 84 matches and played an active role in the club’s Champions League semi-final run during the 1993-1994 season (4 goals in 10 matches). He left immediately for the London team, where he once again showed his finishing skills with 29 goals in only 50 games played, which earned him second place in the 1995 Ballon d’Or.
And when we talk about a formidable striker, Emmanuel Adebayor is logically one of them. Arriving in 2003 at the age of 19 at AS Monaco, the Togolese is in the squad that reached the final of the Champions League. He stayed in the Principality until 2006, scoring 26 goals before joining another London club: Arsenal. It was only in 2011 that he finally arrived at Tottenham, where he stayed until 2015. During these four seasons, he scored 42 goals, playing alongside Eric Dier from 2014 onwards.
Speaking of 2014, that was the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov wear the Diagonale jersey. A true Mozart on the pitch, he showed all his class for 18 months, notably taking part in the epic run to the quarterfinals of the Champions League in 2015. A magnificent journey in which he was one of the main architects since he notably scored against Arsenal in the Round of 16. His was a mastery that Spurs were also able to benefit from earlier in his career, between 2006 and 2008 (102 matches, 46 goals).
