Saint-Étienne, hit by poor form and injuries, are moving to add two defenders before the window shuts tonight at 20:00, according to Le Progres. Deals are not yet finalised, but Aboubaka Soumahoro and Julien Le Cardinal are the leading options.

No further midfielder is expected, and the defensive arrivals would take the winter intake to three after Kanté joined on Friday.

Both players have seen limited minutes but offer top-flight experience, which matches the recruitment brief.

Soumahoro is expected to join on loan from Hamburg. The 20-year-old centre-back, developed at Paris FC, has played only five matches in the past year and was injured at the start of this year.

He will need to regain full fitness before featuring.

Le Cardinal, who can operate centrally or at right-back, has made only five league appearances this season for Brest.

He has not played since 19 December and was sent off in a Cup tie after 21 minutes.
