Brentford have already had offers rejected for Omari Hutchinson, but they're prepared to wait for the Tractor Boys in order to get their man.
Brentford have already had an offer for Omari Hutchinson rejected by Ipswich Town, but they're prepared to wait in order to land the winger.
The Omari Hutchinson transfer saga has turned out to be somewhat more complex than it had originally expected to be.
Hutchinson had a release clause in his Ipswich contract which allowed him to leave the club for £35 million following their relegation from the Premier League, and it had been expected that he would leave at that price.
But there were still negotiations to be had over payment terms, and when these weren't met the release clause expired. But Brentford's interest in the player hasn't gone away, and they're now reported as having a new tactic in order to secure his services before the end of the summer transfer window.
The Evening Standard reports that Brentford are prepared to play a "waiting game", in order to get Hutchinson to their club by the end of the transfer window. It still seems highly likely that the transfer is to go ahead, but the Standard report that Brentford are waiting for Ipswich to find a replacement for him before they proceed with the purchase.
There was no initial disagreement between Brentford over the transfer fee for Omari Hutchinson, since that was originally set in stone by the release clause. However, this wasn't the only matter that had to be taken care of. Brentford also had to meet Ipswich's expectations over payment terms, and when they were unable to do so it coincided with the expiry date of the clause.
This in turn meant that Ipswich were able to ask for what they wanted for the player. It had previously been reported that Ipswich wanted closer to £40 million for him, but a fee of £37.5 million now seems likely to be Brentford's second offer, although they haven't submitted this yet. This would be a new record transfer fee for the Bees.
Ipswich have brought four new players to Portman Road already this summer, but there aren't any wingers among them. So far, Azor Matusiwa, Ashley Young, David Button and Cedric Kipre have all arrived at the club, but none of these players fit the profile of player that would need to be filled in the event of Hutchinson's departure.
It is clear and obvious that Ipswich would prefer to hold onto the player. He is, after all, a highly talented young player with bags of potential to develop further, and so far there has been no direct replacement for Hutchinson arrive at Portman Road.
But while the expiry of the release clause removes their obligation to sell, it likely doesn't remove their need to. It's understood that Hutchinson is keen on the move, and Ipswich will not want to keep an unhappy player at the club. It will therefore be in the best interests of all three parties - the two clubs and the player - to thrash out an agreement, but there's still a month of the transfer window to go, so this sale might not be resolved quickly.
