A new report has outlined the reasoning behind Casemiro’s decision to announce his Manchester United departure five months before his contract ends.
On Thursday evening, United announced that Casemiro will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022. United forked out £70m to snap up the five-time Champions League winner.
He has made 146 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing an impressive 21 goals in that period. This tally includes the opening strike in the 2023 Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle as Erik ten Hag’s United finished third in the Premier League in his first campaign.
There had been uncertainty over his future as he navigated the final year of his contract. It was suggested United were open to extending his terms, although he would have had to accept significantly reduced wages. A report covered by The Peoples Person suggested that the Brazilian could trigger the 12-month extension by starting a certain number of games this season.
According to the Manchester Evening News, having been informed by United some time ago that his future lay elsewhere, Casemiro chose to make an early announcement in order to end transfer rumours.
MEN explain, “United made the decision a while ago that the 33-year-old’s contract wouldn’t be renewed or extended and informed Casemiro that was the situation.”
“But with speculation over his future hitting overdrive in recent weeks, he asked the club to make their plans public in order to ‘bring external clarity’ to the situation, according to a source.”
“Casemiro was keen to avoid incorrect speculation that the club would offer a new contract or trigger an option.”
The report states that by acting early, Casemiro and his team now have sufficient time to carefully plan his next move.
He has previously been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, while a return to his native Brazil has also been mooted.
