The 23-year-old came up through the academies of West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City, before signing for Boro on a permanent deal.

He impressed at the Riverside Stadium, and earned himself a move to the Villans, where he has kicked on even further.

Boro did well out of the deal, but the latest news in Rogers’ career means the Championship club may just have been blocked from maximising their income.

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Rogers is closing in on a new contract at Villa Park.

The new contract, talks of which are only said to be in the early stages at this point, would see the England international extend his stay with the Midlands club to 2031.

Rogers’ current deal already runs to 2030, so this extended offer is a strong show of just how highly regarded he is by the Villa hierarchy.

That strong reputation he’s built up with the club, however, could work against Boro’s favour.

Middlesbrough did well out of Morgan Rogers

Rogers truly announced himself to first-team football at his first permanent senior posting with Boro, after a promising few loan spells.

He provided seven goals and nine assists in 33 appearances for the north-east side in 2023/24 in all competitions, piquing the interest of Villa.

The Premier League outfit splashed out £8m to sign Rogers, as part of a deal that could eventually rise to £15m if certain conditions are met.

That’s a strong profit margin for Boro, made over the course of the year, but was dented slightly by the 25 percent sell-on clause that Manchester City held on Rogers.

New Aston Villa contract may stop Middlesbrough maximising the deal

Boro added their own sell-on clause when they sold Rogers on to Villa, worth 20 percent, according to Birmingham Live.

Presuming that percentage is on the profit of any next sale, and taking into account The Guardian believed before this contract that a bid of at least £50m would be needed to get him out of Villa Park, Boro could be looking at least an extra £7m, depending on what conditions of the original deal have already been met.

However, The Telegraph reported back in May this year that Villa would not accept any fee for Rogers, viewing him as indispensable to the team, which this new contract appears to back up.

Rogers committing more years of his career to Villa, and the club offering to extend his already lengthy terms, appears to suggest that he’s going nowhere anytime soon and, if there is no sale, there is no sell-on fee for Boro.

Given the sorts of sums likely to be involved for Boro if Rogers were to be sold again, there will be plenty of disappointment at the Riverside that the windfall has seemingly just stretched further out of reach.
