Southampton technical director Johannes Spors had been linked with a move to Wolfsburg, but he has a key role to play with the Championship side.

Southampton have had an eventful season so far, but Tonda Eckert’s start to life as head coach has offered some optimism about what the future could hold.

The south coast side appointed Will Still as their new boss in the summer, in the hope that he could lead the team back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

However, the ex-Reims head coach has already been dismissed, with fans understandably angry at all those at the top of the club who had put Saints in this position after their embarrassing relegation from the top-flight in the previous campaign.

Johannes Spors has a key role in Southampton rebuild

One of those figures to come in for criticism is technical director Johannes Spors, but he was trusted to lead the search for Still’s replacement.

After giving Eckert the role on an interim basis, the former Saints U21 boss was then handed the role permanently, and he made it five wins in six games with a convincing win over Birmingham City on Saturday.

Not only have Southampton got results to push them into contention for the play-offs, but they have been playing some outstanding football in the process.

Of course, it’s still very early days, and there’s no denying that Spors and Saints have taken a major gamble in turning to Eckert, but his words of support for the boss suggest he is confident that Eckert can lead a successful era at St. Mary’s Stadium.

To do that, Eckert will look to build a good working relationship with Spors, and it’s important Southampton keep the technical director around, as he had been linked with a move away. It was claimed that Spors is on the radar of Wolfsburg, as they search for a new sporting director.

So far, the Bundesliga outfit are yet to make an appointment, after failing to convince Andrea Schicker to join from Hoffenheim, or Hannover’s Marcus Mann.

Yet, the links to Spors haven’t picked up pace, and the most recent reports state that Wolfsburg are now considering FC Basel’s Daniel Stucki, although that won’t be an easy deal to do either.

Until Wolfsburg do confirm an appointment, there is a chance that Spors could depart, although you can’t imagine that Saints are overly worried.

His role in the decision to turn to Eckert indicates he has given the hierarchy assurances that he will stick around, and it shows he is happy to be part of the project moving forward.

Ultimately, all connected to Southampton need Eckert’s appointment to work out, and Spors will face intense scrutiny if it isn’t successful.

But, the early signs are hugely encouraging, and Spors must now do all he can to ensure the club are ready for the January window as he looks to help the new boss as he looks to build a squad that can go the distance in their promotion push.
