The Sun have chosen an odd time to launch a transfer exclusive, given it’s in the immediate aftermath of a stinging 2-0 defeat for Chelsea at St James’ Park that may end up costing them Champions League football next season.

There’s a lot to play for this season – but clearly summer moves are being made.

The tabloid have launched a new story which is all about Jadon Sancho’s future. We thought this was very much wrapped up – Chelsea have had him on loan from Manchester United all season and will now pay £25m to make that move permanent. The alternative is paying £5m to NOT sign him, and that’s exactly what the Sun are suggesting we’re planning to do.

Sancho has had his best seasons when playing in the Bundesliga, and that’s exactly where they’re proposing he goes. They say that Bayer Leverkusen are happy to pay Man U £20m for him, and United will take them up on it (given they’ll also get the £5m from Chelsea, it adds up to the same).

Sancho will have to take wage cut, wherever he goes

The winger’s wages will be an issue – he’s on a reported £250,000 a week at the moment, and whether he comes to Chelsea or Leverkusen will have to slash that. The Sun say it would be a “hefty drop” for the former Man City youngster.

He’s only got one year left on his contract however – so maybe a compromise can be reached. It will all depend on what Enzo Maresca and the sporting directors really make of Sancho’s season and potential. Is he a useful squad player for next season, or someone who can be upgraded on with a new left winger and Estevao Willian arriving.
