Liverpool have brought an end to one of the transfer sagas of the summer by announcing the club transfer record signing of German international Florian Wirtz for a potential fee of £116m.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal at Anfield, keeping him at the club until June 2030.Arne Slot has wasted little time in strengthening his squad following Liverpool’s Premier League triumph, having already signed another Bayer Leverkusen star in right-back Jeremie Frimpong.
But it’s Wirtz’s arrival that will grab the headlines. Liverpool will pay Bayer Leverkusen £100 million up front, with an additional £16 million in performance-related add-ons, bringing the total potential fee to a possible British transfer record. The deal marks a major statement of intent from Liverpool, who beat off fierce competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City to secure Wirtz’s signature.
The transfer makes Wirtz not only Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever — surpassing Darwin Núñez’s £64 million move in 2022 to the club but also Bayer Leverkusen’s biggest sale, eclipsing Kai Havertz’s transfer to Chelsea.Wirtz arrives at Anfield on the back of an outstanding season in the Bundesliga, where he registered 10 goals and 13 assists in 31 league appearances, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after completing his move, Wirtz said: “I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it’s done and I am really happy.
“I was waiting for a long time — now I’m excited to have a new adventure ahead of me. This was a big factor for me: I wanted something completely new, to leave the Bundesliga and experience the Premier League.”Asked about his ambitions at Liverpool, Wirtz said: “I would like to win everything every year! Of course, first we have to do our work, I have to do my work, but in the end, we want to be successful.
“They won the Premier League last season, so my goal is to help win it again and go even further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”
