It was a frustrating opening 45 minutes for the visitors, who on another night could have otherwise gone into the half-time interval potentially up by a pair of goals but would ultimately be made to pay for missed chances.

Maximilian Beier was unlucky to hit the post with a well-struck effort in the opening 15 minutes, while Serhou Guirassy perhaps should have headed home 10 minutes later but could only miss just wide of Kamil Grabara’s left-hand post.

Dortmund was perhaps lucky to not see Felix Nmecha sent off in the 56th minute after a bad foul was only deemed to be worthy of a yellow, but despite the controversial non-call, Die Schwarzgelben continued to craft chances they were incapable of converting.

Wolfsburg would fire a warning shot early in extra time after substitute Thiago TomĂĄs struck the bar inside three minutes into bonus football, but neither side could find the breakthrough at Volkswagen Arena in the first stanza.

Ramy Bensebaini temporarily spared Dortmund blushes 10 minutes from the end of extra time when the Algerian did just enough to deflect Jonas Wind’s goal-bound header just wide of Gregor Kobel’s goal.

Die Wölfe finally found the upset goal less than four minutes from full-time thanks to the aforementioned Wind with a cool finish under pressure after Marcel Sabitzer failed to deal with a loose ball in the box.

The result consigns Dortmund to its fifth-consecutive defeat away from home this season as pressure continues to mount on ƞahin.
