Wolfsburg correspondent Thomas Hiete of Kicker Magazine reports that the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club is preparing to sack both head coach Daniel Bauer and managing director Peter Christiansen. After opting to give Bauer just a bit more time after last week’s league loss, the German Wolves are now ready to undertake this long-awaited double firing.

Hiete writes that, at present, former Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking (with whom the club has already been linked). Over the course of the week, there were some whispers about the German rumor mills that Wolfsburg might re-invigorate their interest in former academy coach Thomas Reis. The former Bochum and Schalke head coach is now available outright after being released by Samsunspor in February.

Wolfsburg sporting director declined to commit to Bauer

The club’s relatively new sporting director Pirmin Schwegler – linked with a move to the bench himself – remained evasive when it came time to answer questions about potential coaching and administrative moves in the mixed zone. Schwegler’s words, glib and trite, spoke volumes.

Needless to say [this was] not a good day for VfL Wolfsburg,” Schwegler said. “It’s tough to stand here and find the right words. We have to let everything sink in and have discussions. Tomorrow we will continue and we will make a decision. We will say something when there is something to say.

Captain Maximilian Arnold expresses frustration

Squad captain Maximilian Arnold – who has already delivered epic post-match rants this season – was back in action as a substitute off the Wolfsburg bench on Saturday. Like his fellow long-term “club man” Yannick Gerhardt last week, Arnold took his turn at venting frustration in an angry outburst in front of the Sky Germany microphones.

It’s brutal and I can’t find the right words,” Arnold told his Sky interviewer. “It’s not as if we didn’t want it enough. It’s just symbolic when you’re down and shit like what happened today occurs. “It’s crazy. How many penalties we get against us and how many goals we concede.”

We can’t get the damn ball over the line,” Arnold added later in the mixed zone. “When you’ve scored one goal, you have to score a second and defend well so that you don’t squander the lead again. These are things we keep going round in circles with.

Sometimes, one has to get frustration and brutal disappointment out,” Arnold said of the post match scuffle on the Volkswagen Arena pitch and the accompanying fan protest that saw flares thrown onto the playing surface. We still have to pick ourselves up

There are still nine games to go,” Arnold concluded. “Giving up makes no sense. That doesn’t work. It never has.
