Manchester City fielded interest from within the Premier League over the future of Kalvin Phillips during the recent summer transfer window, it has been revealed.

Despite Phillips ultimately staying at the Etihad Stadium following another frustrating few months for the midfielder, he remains a name regularly linked with departures as the January window approaches.

His situation under Pep Guardiola is well documented through ongoing limited minutes, two loan spells across the last two seasons, and continued competition in one of Europe’s most demanding midfields.

This summer brought another opportunity for clubs to make their move, but an Achilles operation carried out complicated matters further. Phillips missed pre-season entirely, restricting the chances of interested clubs to assess his readiness before committing to a transfer or loan.

Manchester City, meanwhile, opted to keep him for at least the first half of the season as he builds fitness and reintegrates with the squad. Elsewhere in the Premier League, Wolves are among the clubs understood to have explored a potential move earlier in the year.

Their latest reported interest comes amid Rob Edwards’ efforts to reshape Wolves’ midfield options following a season of poor performances and the sacking of Vitor Pereira.

Speaking on the latest edition of the E&S podcast, journalist Liam Keen has addressed recent claims suggesting new managers Edwards and Wolves could look to secure a deal for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips in January.

“I can confirm that he was a target, or considered a target, in the summer,” Keen revealed this week.

He continued, “But there was a decision not to go for him in the end. I don’t know exactly whether they’re going to return for him or not.

“It will be interesting to see whether that’s an area they go for. It depends really on what Rob thinks they need for the squad.”

With the January window still several weeks away, both clubs will reassess their midfield needs and resources. For Manchester City, Phillips’ place in the squad remains uncertain, particularly as Guardiola continues to rely heavily on Nico and Tijjani Reijnders while aiming to bring Rodri back into the fold as soon as the Spaniard returns to full fitness himself.

For Wolves, a move could hinge on fitness, finances, and the performances of their current midfielders over the next two months. They will also be wary of the loan market dynamics, given City’s willingness to sanction temporary deals but typically preferring clubs that match their valuation and development expectations.

Should Wolves reignite their interest, Phillips could become one of the most high-profile Premier League midfielders available in January, and one whose future may finally require a decisive turning point after disrupted years in Manchester.
