THE MATCH

The first phase of the match was tense for Juve and, as a consequence, Milan got off to a good start as they waited for the Bianconere, often relying on Chanté-Mary Dompig’s long levers.

In the 22nd minute Juve turned it on and made themselves dangerous twice inside a minute: first with Abi Brighton, who spotted Noemi Fedele off her line and, when she picked up the ball on the three-quarter line, tried to surprise her from distance. The shot went high, and the same fate befell Lisa Boattin shortly afterwards, when she came in from the left and attempted a looping shot at the other end.

These two chances injected more conviction into Bianconere’s play as they stepped up their pace and began to play with more momentum.

In the 26th minute it was Sofia Cantore who took aim from the edge of the box, narrowly missing the target; Juve maintained their territorial dominance but were unable to bring any clear-cut goal scoring chances into Fedele’s box. It was Milan who became braver and, in the 41st minute, made themselves dangerous with an unrelenting attack, like a pinball in the Juve area although Pauline Peyraud-Magnin wasn’t called upon to intervene.

A BRACE FROM GIRELLI AND THEY’RE FLYING

The turning point came in the 44th minute: Cristiana Girelli was brought down in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. A penalty for the Bianconere and Cristiana made it one-nil.

Girelli at the end of the first half and Girelli again at the start of the second. No sooner had they come back on than the Bianconere doubled their lead with an important goal that paved the way for their win.

Milan tried to react and with 60 minutes gone, it was Valentina Cernoia who wreaked havoc on the Bianconere’s defence, which held up well, and yet again nothing made it through to trouble Peyraud-Magnin.

In the final phase of the game, the Bianconere were skilfully on top, controlling runs made by a battling Milan and almost getting a third with a great volley from Cantore that was met with a save from Milan’s keeper in the 66th minute.

A few minutes later, Girelli made herself dangerous with a free kick from the edge of the box, with it just flying over. PPM also got a share of the glory in the 80th when she came out to beat Dompig.

Then, the final minutes, waiting for those incredible three whistles.

The final minutes we’d been missing for a few years and that we’ve now experienced again, all together. Now we can cheer loudly:

GIRLS, YOU’RE CHAMPIONS OF ITALY! STARS AGAIN! STARS A6AIN!
